Where’s global warming?
Jun 6th, 2009 by Rick Arms
SUPPOSE the climate landscape in recent weeks looked something like this:
Half the country was experiencing its mildest winter in years, with no sign of snow in many Northern states. Most of the Great Lakes were ice-free. Not a single Canadian province had had a white Christmas. There was a new study discussing a mysterious surge in global temperatures - a warming trend more intense than computer models had predicted. Other scientists admitted that, because of a bug in satellite sensors, they had been vastly overestimating the extent of Arctic sea ice.
If all that were happening on the climate-change front, do you think you’d be hearing about it on the news? Seeing it on Page 1 of your daily paper? Would politicians be exclaiming that global warming was even more of a crisis than they’d thought? Would environmentalists be skewering global-warming “deniers” for clinging to their skepticism despite the growing case against it?
No doubt.
But it isn’t such hints of a planetary warming trend that have been piling up in profusion lately. Just the opposite.
The United States has shivered through an unusually severe winter, with snow falling in such unlikely destinations as New Orleans, Las Vegas, Alabama, and Georgia. On Dec. 25, every Canadian province woke up to a white Christmas, something that hadn’t happened in 37 years. Earlier this year, Europe was gripped by such a killing cold wave that trains were shut down in the French Riviera and chimpanzees in the Rome Zoo had to be plied with hot tea. Last week, satellite data showed three of the Great Lakes - Erie, Superior, and Huron - almost completely frozen over. In Washington, D.C., what was supposed to be a massive rally against global warming was upstaged by the heaviest snowfall of the season, which paralyzed the capital.
Meanwhile, the National Snow and Ice Data Center has acknowledged that due to a satellite sensor malfunction, it had been underestimating the extent of Arctic sea ice by 193,000 square miles - an area the size of Spain. In a new study, University of Wisconsin researchers Kyle Swanson and Anastasios Tsonis conclude that global warming could be going into a decades-long remission. The current global cooling “is nothing like anything we’ve seen since 1950,” Swanson told Discovery News. Yes, global cooling: 2008 was the coolest year of the past decade - global temperatures have not exceeded the record high measured in 1998, notwithstanding the carbon-dioxide that human beings continue to pump into the atmosphere.
None of this proves conclusively that a period of planetary cooling is irrevocably underway, or that anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions are not the main driver of global temperatures, or that concerns about a hotter world are overblown. Individual weather episodes, it always bears repeating, are not the same as broad climate trends.
But considering how much attention would have been lavished on a comparable run of hot weather or on a warming trend that was plainly accelerating, shouldn’t the recent cold phenomena and the absence of any global warming during the past 10 years be getting a little more notice? Isn’t it possible that the most apocalyptic voices of global-warming alarmism might not be the only ones worth listening to?

If satelllite temperature data is false because of changes in orbit that skew results, and land stations for measuring data might also be skewed due to the effects of urbanization, and sea data may be unreliable because they mysteriously show no warming, Then what system are we to use to determine temperature trends? A mixed average of these and corrections to results for variables is still gonna give you bad data that translates into bad conclusions….
Of course they know it. They are not really idiots. They know very well that they are using falsified data, but count on no one checking or the ones that do can be hounded out of rational debate.
And this is exactly why Gore don’t want to debate anything and certainly not talk about the sceince. He does not have a leg to stand on…
He also would not like people to find out how much he is profiting from global warming theories
None of those clowns will debate at least what we would call a debate.
For every actual point you will make they will answer not with a counterpoint but an accusation, always using vague suppositions with a subtle or not so subtle hint that you are stupid for accepting the “oil company propaganda”.
In the end you’ll get nothing for the time expended, but it amusing sometimes. I had a PhD professor tell me finally after a discussion at a party that “maybe the evidence isn’t there but you have to know we’re right”.
I don’t remember what his PhD was in but I don’t think it was technical. But it typical of what you’ll run into. They don’t want to hear data, they won’t talk about all the episodes of falsified data and they won’t talk about ( because they don’t understand) computer modeling.
Anyone can make a computer model that can prove or disprove anything.
I did one last year to prove a point. My model transmuted lead into gold. The model worked and it would transmute virtual lead into virtual gold all day. It’s when you try to do it for real that things get interesting.
I had one tell me one time that the models were right but their failure to predict this cooling trend we have been in the last 10 years was ok becuase the models didn’t account for solar activity.
Here’s a so-called model of the Earths climate and the model IGNORED the sun!
And they wonder why we laugh at them.
You wish pal!
I will out debate you any day of the week.
“I had a PhD professor tell me finally after a discussion at a party that “maybe the evidence isn’t there but you have to know we’re right”.”
Bullshit.
“I don’t remember what his PhD was in but I don’t think it was technical. But it typical of what you’ll run into.”
Yeah right lol!
“they won’t talk about all the episodes of falsified data and they won’t talk about ( because they don’t understand) ”
Are you kidding? Even though there may have been episodes of erroneous data, only YOUR side has been repeatedly proven to be liars, not only with their bullshit counter theories but also with their qualifications and conflicts of interest, and that’s before we even get to the numerous intentional and unintentional errors in their “work”.
“I did one last year to prove a point. My model transmuted lead into gold. The model worked and it would transmute virtual lead into virtual gold all day. It’s when you try to do it for real that things get interesting.”
Oh give over! Intentionally writing a retarded program does NOT mean another program is not producing good results! And you think you’re intelligent? You don’t even understand simple logic!
“I had one tell me one time that the models were right but their failure to predict this cooling trend we have been in the last 10 years was ok becuase the models didn’t account for solar activity.”
The “cooling trend” WAS predicted because it is a result of the El Nino/La Nina cycle! I say this because by saying the last 10 years, you are cherry picking the start and end date to show what you want it to show.
As you are aware (?) 1998 was a peak El Nino year and (even though the Sun’s output was only slightly higher than it is now) this resulted in 1998 being an extremely hot year, in fact, the HOTTEST on record. Not only was it the hottest but it was well above the trend line - a clear “outlier” in the data. Over the next couple of years, the El Nino weakened and faded and the temperatures dropped back to the trend line, then La Nina started, and the temperatures dipped below the trend line. We are at the tail end of the La Nina, and thus 2008, 10 years later, is the 10th hottest year on record.
Note, last year was hotter than nearly every year we have measured, and so have been the last ten years! The El Nino/La Nina cycle is a natural oscillation in the data, but the trend is still upwards.
The problem for the truth tellers is that cycles such as El Nino/La Nina occur over decadal time spans. This allows the liars and deniers to say something like “we are in a cooling trend”, or that “warming has stopped”, but when El Nino arrives and we get more hottest years on record, they will pretend they never said any of it, just like when they originally said the global wasn’t warming, then when it was unequivocal that it was, claiming they had never said it wasn’t.
Once the cycle changes, they’ll find some other bullshit to delay progress, and hope you forget they lied AGAIN, and they hope that by the time we stop them, they will have cleaned us out, and it will be too late. They don’t give a shit what happens to most of the people on this planet, and massive flooding wont affect them because they’ll be the only ones capable of affording the safe land.
People like this retard Alex are either cynical liars and KNOW that what they are peddling is bullshit, or they are truly deluded, and thus no amount of evidence will get them to change their story. There is nothing scientific about that.
The only thing Al Gore will truly be remembered for is the ‘Al Gore Econo-Toilet’. You know, the one you end up having to flush two or three times instead of once. Too much bullshit, I would guess.
You gotta love when anti-global-warming rallies get snowed on. Or when an ice storm hits where they’re going to have one.
Maybe these nuts should take the hint…?
It is a pity, that now I can not express - I am late for a meeting. I will be released - I will necessarily express the opinion.
Karmakaze is correct about why some folks think (incorrectly) that there has been recent global cooling. I have a Web page dedicated to this topic at:
