Obama’s Day: Obama to unveil new vehicle standards He Who Pays the Piper
May 19th, 2009 by Rick Arms
The Obama administration says it is time to increase mileage requirements for cars and trucks. The auto industry is apparently on board:
In secret conversations, the Obama administration has lined up support from many state governments and a huge array of domestic and foreign automakers, including GM, Ford, Chrysler, BMW and many more.
Auto executives are flying into Washington from around the world for the White House announcement.
Now, it could be that the administration is overstating the degree to which industry leaders support this plan — it has done that before. But if this report is accurate, it represents a pretty dramatic reversal for the auto industry. In previous years, the domestic automakers have spent millions opposing higher fuel-economy standards on the grounds that compliance would be ruinously expensive:
All in all, domestic automakers figure that it will cost them $83 billion to meet the new regulations, which call for a hike in the corporate average fuel economy to 35 miles per gallon by 2020. That would be a lot of money for prosperous Google or Berkshire Hathaway, much less an industry that is already losing billions of dollars.
Of course, paying for the new standards is no longer Detroit’s problem. It’s our problem.

Obama finds yet another way to raise the price of new cars, hurt the poorest Americans, and stick it to domestic auto manufacturers. Pretty much a standard Monday.
Here is how Obama sticks it to business and the consumer without having to raise taxes! Dictating anti free enterprise poicies withou to even having to go to congress. This is even worse than any conservative even imagined when he gotinto office. These new regulations force the car companies to make little tonka cars that most people do not want to drive at a time when the car companies are bankrupt. Lot of sense here. You and I as consumers are going to pay higher prices for crappy little cars. Good by SUVs goodbye Trucks. This has been one of Obama goals all along and proves that he is a socialist. After agreeing to allow drilling in the campaign (in another one of his lies) he turns right around and not only does everything to stop it, but sticks another one of his anti business regulations in. All of this in the name of the biggest most costly hoax ever perpetrated on the American public GLOBAL WARMING. Thanks independents and moderates for voting for this SOCIALIST!!!
He wants to save the auto makers but installs more stringent requirements on them….that’ll really help the auto industry. Actually it’ll require them to stop making trucks and SUV’s which drag down their fuel economy numbers and hurt their CAFE. Something many other foreign auto makers don’t have.
I do think it’s funny how the UAW supported Obama and here he is drivin them to the unemployment line (pun intended).
BTW Republicants….I don’t listen to talking points. I have my own opinions.
Idonotlike…: I don’t think that Obama is a Socialist. I do, however, think that he lacks the wisdom, experience, Stage 2 Thinking, and practical judgement to govern as an Executive - which can make him far more dangerous. But if someone is like that Wilco above, and you hate it when people have jobs due to a growing economy, then this guy is your wet dream. And if you think that “clean air” is an issue in this country then you are under 30 and haven’t bothered to read up on what you think you believe in. I lived in LA in the early 80’s. Clean air… Jeesh…Compassion as a Gov’t policy becomes Cruelty as a social reality.
More rules? More rules? Someone get him a copy of the 10th amendment stat!
